SPANG&LEI is Serena Pang and Wen Lei.

Serena Pang is currently a performance studies researcher. A theatre actor by training and profession, she is making her forays into performance research. She was awarded the Performance Studies Emerging Scholar Award by Tisch School of the Arts, NYU, New York. Serena endeavours to be a perceptive performer-archivist using digital performance as a sustainable methodology for investigations into the dimensions of Citizenship.

Wen Lei is a graduate of NYU’s Interactive Telecommunication Programme (ITP) and was awarded the Tisch School of the Arts Scholarship from NYU, New York. She hopes to initiate a dialogue between the coalescence of digital-art technology and Singapore’s level of participatory politics. Her interests include object-oriented-ontology (OOO), developing miniaturization and mobility as research methodology for minoritarian empowerment.

SPANG&LEI are digital art advocates and educators. They are founders of Betwixt Festival, Singapore’s first home-grown digital interactive art festival created with the purpose of putting Art into the Singapore’s Smart Nation endeavour.

Eugene Soh a.k.a. DUDE (b. 1987) is a computer programmer who accidentally became an artist when his photographic piece, contextualizing Da Vinci’s Last Supper in a local hawker centre setting, surfaced on social media in 2012. That discovery, with its tongue-in-cheek commentary on contemporary life in Singapore, catapulted him into the art world. He has since been a full time artist delving in Art and Technology, with a passion for Virtual and Augmented reality. His recent VR works focus on the elderly and long-stay hospital patients, with purpose of therapy and introducing them to technology.

Urich Lau, born 1975, is a visual artist, independent curator and art educator based in Singapore. Focusing in video art and photography, he has presented works in Singapore, Australia, China, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, South Korea, Serbia, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States and Uzbekistan. Exhibitions include Singapore Biennale 2013, VII Tashkent International Biennale of Contemporary Art, the 7th Geumgang Nature Art Biennale, Pyeongchang Biennale 2017, and a finalist in the Sovereign Asian Art Prize in 2014 and 2016.

He has curated exhibitions and events including METAGRAPHY at DECK (Singapore, 2017) and MEME Space (Taipei, 2017), Singapore Open Media Art Festival 2015 at Gillman Barracks (Singapore, 2015); The Third Print at Total Museum of Contemporary Art (Seoul, 2014); Videologue at Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore (2012) and Sunshine International Art Museum (Beijing, 2011); Videology at The Substation (Singapore, 2008) and Displacement Project: Bandung–Singapore 2006.

He received his Master of Fine Art from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 2004 and works as a lecturer at LASALLE College of the Arts, a founding member of the art collective INTER–MISSION, a member of The Artists Village, Instinctive (INSTINC Art Space), and resident artist at Goodman Arts Centre in Singapore.

“My art practice focuses on themes of culture, memory, and nostalgia, and my body of work consists of performative pieces that leverage technology as a tool to question memory and time. In these pieces, I combine the use of video, photography, puppetry, and performance. I also explore aspects within and outside my own culture by utilizing borrowed memories and nostalgia, and reimagine and [re]present these narratives as a way of viewing spaces differently.”

Graduated with Master of Arts Fine Arts, Singapore/Goldsmiths, installation artist Angela Chong has been creating fictional realities in her installations. Using light projections with found objects to present the presence of absence in dark enclosures, she entices her audience to question the emotional attachments between the object and its owner, in the context of personal history and site-specific darkness.

A recipient of NAC scholarship (Postgraduate), she is currently investigating intentions of darkness and the notion of light as image. She is focusing her research on news-specific media to exemplify our understanding of information and ‘truths’ on the subject of conflict, and examine the hierarchy relationship between image and text.

She had gone for several artist residencies, in Iceland, Japan and Czech Republic and had participated in both local and international light festivals such as 100 points of light in Melbourne 2006, three editions of iLight Marina Bay 2010-2014, Vivid Sydney Light Festival 2011-2012, Amsterdam Light Festival 2012, Festival of Light 2015 in Jerusalem, Israel and Norrkoping Light Festival 2015, Sweden, Future Proof at 8Q, SAM, and Singapore Eye at ArtScience Museum. She had recently participated in The Story of Space Festival in Goa, India, and MeshMInds 1.0: ArtxTechforGood in ArtScience Museum.

Ong Kian Peng is a media artist based in Singapore. As an artist, his works takes on a multiple-disciplinary approach, he is interested in nature, sound and our perceptual apparatus; often resulting in works with that employs a combination of sound, digital media and kinetic format.

His recent exhibitions includes : Singapore Inside Out:Sydney 2017, Oh! Open house, the President’s Young Talents Exhibition, a solo show at Arebyte Gallery London, Sound : Latitude and Longitude at ICA Singapore, Singapore M1 Fringe Festival.He has shown his works in various exhibitions and festivals including the International Computer Music Conference, Siggraph Art Gallery in Los Angeles, FILE Festival Brazil, Asian Students and Young Artists Festival in South Korea, Japan Media Arts Festival, Singapore Open Media Art Festival 2017. Ong was awarded with the President’s Young Talent Grand Prize in 2015.

Kian Peng’s works addresses the connection between man and nature, and themes surrounding the sublime, creating works that attempts to allow audiences to re-discover the beauty of the natural world. Kian Peng graduated from UCLA with a MFA in Design Media Art. He is currently an adjunct lecturer in NAFA and co-runs Modular Unit, an art and design studio. Since 2017, he runs Supernormal, an independent arts space started by Modular Unit, focusing on emerging and experimental arts practice.
